Understanding Different Fire Types for Proper Restoration

Fires are classified by the fuel that sustains them, and knowing the type of fire is crucial for effective cleanup and restoration:
  • Class A: Flammable solids (wood, paper, cloth). Usually extinguished with water.
  • Class B: Flammable liquids (gasoline, solvents). Requires foam chemicals for extinguishing.
  • Class C: Electrical fires from appliances or wiring. Use CO2 or non-conductive extinguishers.
  • Class D: Combustible metals (titanium, magnesium). Requires specialized powders, not water.
  • Class K:  Grease or oil fires, typically kitchen-related. Never use water—opt for Class B extinguishers.

Smoke Residue and Cleaning Methods

Fire leaves behind different types of smoke residue:

  • Protein Residue: Common in cooking fires, can discolor cabinets and is difficult to spot.
  • Fuel or Oil Residue (Petroleum): Rare in homes, often from “puffback” events in furnaces.
  • Wet Smoke: Thick, black residue from smoldering fires. Extremely difficult to clean, especially from rubber to plastic.

We use a combination of cleaning, resurfacing, and replacement depending on the severity of the fire and smoke damage. Smaller fires may allow us to clean most surfaces, while larger fires may require extensive placement of items like walls, ceilings, and furniture.
